Sailing Castle: A Symbolic Pavilion by Cheng Tsung Feng

Interpreting the Enchanting Scenery of Donggang

The shape of the Sailing Castle manifests the architectural attributes of local and traditional culture in Donggang via its modern art form. In the motif of FENG, the Sailing Castle is endowed with the qualities of temples, churches, and shrines. Furthermore, it furnishes audiences with distinctive charismas from day to night.

Artist Cheng Tsung Feng has created a truly unique and captivating design with the Sailing Castle. This symbolic pavilion, constructed with wood, features white sails that are harmoniously intertwined among the structure, giving the impression of many sailboats gathering at the harbor. The result is an enormous sculptural entity that embodies the enchanting scenery from the Donggang coast.

What sets the Sailing Castle apart is not only its striking visual appeal but also its commitment to sustainability. The wood used in the construction is Taiwanese cedar, verified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring the protection of the forest environment. By using domestically produced materials, the project also supports local industries and keeps profits within Taiwan. After the lantern festival, most of the materials will be reused instead of being discarded. The wood parts, light fixtures, and unprinted canvas will be brought back to the studio for future projects, making this short-term display environmentally friendly.

The Sailing Castle stands at an impressive 886cm wide, 610cm deep, and 800cm tall. Its grand presence and intricate design make it a true masterpiece of micro architecture. The attention to detail and craftsmanship are evident in every aspect of the structure.

Designed as an interactive installation, the Sailing Castle invites people to enter and explore its enchanting world. The interaction between people and the pavilion represents the prosperity of the fishery industry, communal unity, and a sense of joy and expectation.

The Sailing Castle project took place from February 2019 to March 2019 in Pingtung, Taiwan. It was a collaborative effort involving various entities, including the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Pingtung County Government, and Jollify LTD. The project was curated by Derjk Wu and Mikael Fock, with artist Cheng Tsung Feng leading the design team.

This exceptional design has received recognition and acclaim, including the Iron A' Design Award in 2019. The Sailing Castle is a testament to the power of art, architecture, and design to create unique and captivating experiences.
